How it Started
9Pines started with the simple observation: many couples overlook the role of taste in intimacy. While conversations about romance often center around candlelit dinners and soft music, some essential aspects of intimacy get overlooked. Taste, smell, and normal bodily functions can all impact these shared moments. We’re always exploring new ways to help couples connect on a deeper level, and we identified an opportunity to enhance the flavors a couple might experience during intimacy.
Having established our flagship product, the Taste Changing Tablets, which make everything you put on your tongue taste sweet (yes, everything. lol), we recognized the importance of creating a product that keeps your partner’s experience in mind. Taste not only impacts the giver's experience, but the receivers as well. There are all sorts of insecurities that pop up in these vulnerable moments, and how you taste to your partner is a very real barrier for many people who would otherwise want to receive oral sex. That’s when the idea was born for a daily shot that makes your own sexual fluids taste sweeter for your partner.
The Power of Pineapple
To create a product that resonated with our vision, we turned to a food often discussed online for it's sweetening properties - pineapple. Not only is it delicious, it's also packed with bromelain—an enzyme known for helping the body to breakdown foods that can cause unwanted tastes and smells "down there", making the body taste sweeter naturally. We wanted to harness this power to provide a fun, tasty, and effective solution that couples could incorporate into their daily routines.
As we started to research, we realized that tons of people are drinking canned pineapple juice in order to make themselves taste sweeter. The problem is that these juices are pasteurized which kills all of the bromelain and removes the self-sweetening properties of pineapple. Another common option is to simply eat fresh pineapple. This does work, but a majority of the bromelain in pineapple lives in parts that you wouldn’t want to eat (The stem, skin, etc). You would have to eat a RIDICULOUS amount of pineapple flesh to make a noticeable difference, so we knew there had to be an easier way.
Packing in the Power
In our research we learned that mango, papaya, cranberry, and cinnamon would add to the self-sweeting properties of our concoction. That’s when we decided: If we’re gonna do this, we should go all out. We knew sourcing these ingredients would add to the complexity and cost of the product, but we wanted to pack as much power as we could in this little 2oz. shot. So, with our key ingredients determined, it was time to start formulating.
Crafting the Perfect Blend
Creating the perfect formula required endless tasting and testing. Turns out, bromelain tastes pretty awful on its own. The initial testing of 9Pines involved blending our self-sweetening fruits to achieve the right balance of tartness and sweetness while maximizing the benefits of bromelain. Our small team (and some patient friends and family) became the taste testers. We spent countless hours experimenting, refining, and perfecting the ratios until we finally hit the sweet spot. A delicious little drink that packs the self-sweetening power of 9 whole pineapples.
